When he was nine, his mother and younger brother presumably died in the cholera outbreak. His father took him and left after they discovered that the other two had the disease, hoping to keep themselves from getting it. It worked, and his father turned to a life of crime, at first as a means of providing for himself and his then-young son, but then continued because he'd built a reputation and somewhat enjoyed putting his intelligence to a different kind of work.

Jaime's name is pronounced the same as Jamie, I just wanted to change up the spelling a little. Not a typo, though I can see how you would think that.
